The Great Divide: Not So Great?

A couple of issues ago I shared some best practices for allowing your kids to utilize technology, and some practical ways to keep them safe while doing so. This time, I'm going to flip a complete 180 and address the other side of the spectrum; computers and how they relate to our elders.


With the growth rate in this segment of our population weighing in at nothing short of astounding, you undoubtedly know someone 20, 30 or even 40 years your senior who has recently purchased their first computer or plans to do so in the not too distant future. Parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles alike have all jumped on the proverbial techwagon so to speak, and for many of us that means we are now the designated chauffeur whether we like it or not!


Believe me, I've heard some of the horror stories: Aunt Mildred just got a new 'puter and now Johnny is on the phone every other night for two hours and seventeen minutes at a time, and it usually begins with something eerily similar to this:


"Hi Johnny..."


"Hi Auntie Millie!..."


"I tell you, this newfangled contraption sure is great, but now I can't seem to _______________, it was working just fine yesterday though..."


"Oh really? I could, um, maybe, probably, help you with that. Click Start..."


By the way, go ahead and take a minute now to go back and fill in that blank as it pertained to your last phone call. I know you can, and you know you want to ;-)


Joking aside, the good news is that phone calls like that diminish over time. It may seem hard to believe (or even remember!) but there was a point when even we experienced using a computer or surfing the 'net for the first time and couldn't get by without our training wheels attached. Remember how foreign it all seemed as we weebled and wobbled our way around URLs, email, and how to type an ampersand character? Look how far we've come since then! So give Aunt Millie a break and remember that in time she will reach a point where she will no longer rely on her Digital Confidant (a.k.a. you) for everyday computer tasks.


This then begs the question: Is this technological divide among generations really so great, or are our elders simply getting a late start with all of it? My gut leans toward the latter, which tells me we should embrace their desire to integrate technology into their lives so they can benefit from it as much as we have. Besides, we have learned so much from their knowledge, wisdom and experiences in life that it is only fair that we share ours with them.


So go ahead, buy your mom that new laptop for Christmas!
